It's Time to Prepare for Hurricane Season

It's Time to Prepare for Hurricane Season

2020 has been a challenging year so far and with everything else going on, many haven’t given much thought to their hurricane preparations—but it’s time for that to change.

The final countdown to the June kickoff of the Atlantic storm season is on, and it will be here in just a couple of weeks. Are you ready?

While some prep won’t happen until a storm has been named, there are some things you can do now to get a jump on the planning. This will help you to be better prepared if we end up with a hurricane heading our way.

Replenish Your Supplies
Do you have everything you need on hand to get by for at least three days without electricity or city water? What about emergency communication devices and a first aid kit? Check your supplies and replenish anything that’s getting low and consider adding some new items to your emergency preparedness kits.

Examples of what you need in your hurricane kit include:

  • Three-Day Supply of Food for Everyone in Your Home
  • One Gallon of Water Per Person, Per Day
  • Battery-Powered Radio
  • NOAA Weather Radio
  • Flashlights and Extra Batteries
  • Infant Care Needs (Diapers, Formula, etc…)
  • Extra Prescription Medications
  • Waterproof Container for Important Family Documents

Don’t Forget the Pets
When building your kit and making your evacuation plans, don’t forget your pets! Include extra food as well as extra water for each pet. Don’t forget any prescription medicines your pet requires. You also want to include them in your travel plans, and that means looking for a pet-friendly hotel.

Make Travel Plans
Where will go if you have to evacuate? This isn’t a decision you want to make at the last minute. If you can’t go stay with friends or family, pick a few hotels that are far enough away. That way, if it looks like a storm may hit, you can call and make a reservation well in advance before the hotel books up. If the storm ends up turning, you can simply cancel the reservation. Making these types of decisions ahead of time will reduce the stress as a storm approaches.

Shore Up Your Home
Making sure your home is ready to withstand heavy wind and rains is one of the best things you can do in advance of hurricane season. The roof and siding repairs or replacement you’ve been putting off? Now is the time to move on those.

If your roof is in solid condition, it will be better able to withstand severe weather. On the other hand, an outdated or even slightly damaged roof or siding, leaves your home susceptible to leaks and to issues you may not even notice until thousands of dollars in damage has occurred.Bayview Exteriors’ roofing and siding services can help you prepare for the coming hurricane season.
